Google Loves Snacks Too

8 Apr

Last Sunday, I was delighted to go online and see a mouthwatering ice cream sundae greet me on the Google homepage! It was an attractive retro design, with a scrawl of seafoam-green colored font spelling out “Google.” Two heaping scoops of ice cream forming the oo’s perfectly. Google never seemed yummier.

Because of this unexpected design, it’s rumored that Ice Cream might be the code name for Google’s next Android update. Google’s previous updates were famously named, “Froyo” and “Gingerbread.” Not sure if Ice Cream is the codename, but it’s clear Google employs some serious snack lovers. I approve!

A Sweet Lesson: The Anatomy of a Cupcake

25 Mar

My love affair with all-things-cupcakes continues. Here’s a sweet lesson captured in a custom-made diagram, “Anatomy of a Cupcake.” It was made as a birthday gift to a friend (aw). You can also see a charming video of its creation (as well as purchase this fine art print) here.

I Heart Chocolate Chip Cookies (Hold the Chocolate Chips)

16 Mar

I love a good chocolate chip cookie. Without the chocolate chips, that is. Or at least as fewww chocolate chips as possible. And only if they’re melted, not in whole chip form, if you please. Unlike most people, when the delightful aroma of fresh, homemade chocolate chip cookies descends upon me, I poke around for the cookies that appear to have the fewest chocolate chips. That’s right–the FEWEST chocolate chips! Many of you are skeptical. Baffled. You are wondering, Well isn’t she describing a *Sugar* Cookie then? Actually, I am not. Sugar Cookies are made of a different dough than chocolate chip cookies. And it’s much more sugar-y (duh) and not as dense.

Back to my problem with chocolate chip cookies. I’m simply not much of a chocolate lover.  I find that the chocolate usually lends cookies an overpowering richness and super-sweetness I don’t care for. And it’s only getting in the way of the chewy, dough-y goodness of the cookie itself.

So I wonder how many other souls out there are just like me…seeking chocolate chip cookies without the chocolate chips? Is this how left-handed people feel in a right-handed world?

To be fair, I have to admit that I CAN enjoy a chocolate chip cookie. And the best chocolate chip cookie I’ve ever had was a homemade recipe I got a several years ago that called for Trader Joe’s milk chocolate. I came across this at the law firm I worked at after college. Every so often, the wife of one of our partners would come by midday with a freshly baked batch of chocolate chip cookies. They were  amazingly delicious! I think the reason why I liked them so much is because they were 1) milky, 2) melted, and 3) without the sharp chocolate bursts that overpowers the taste of the cookie dough. yum. Oh, and the recipe called for lard too. I suppose that *might* have been another factor to the smooth cookie goodness.

Star Wars Groom’s Cookies

12 Jul

I got married a few weeks ago, and it was the best and happiest day ever!! Leading up to the wedding, there were a few things I absolutely could not wait to delight my guests with on the big day. One of these was the Star Wars cookies I custom-ordered–Yoda, Darth Vader, and Storm Troopers–as a surprise for my new hubby.

My hubby is a Star Wars fan. I mean, he doesn’t just watch the movies (over and over), he reads Star Wars books too! I knew that Groom’s Cakes are a big trend now. But I couldn’t decide on a design.  Well, one day I was shopping in Beverly Hills, and lo and behold, I saw the super cutest Star Wars Cookie Cutters at Williams Sonoma. I knew it would be the perfect thing to surprise my groom at the wedding! I asked my awesome dessert vendor (Diana Chou Designs) to make these. And they were a hit. Yay! Weddings can get super girly and easily overpowered by all sorts of feminine details and touches. So it was cool to have an element that got not just my hubby, but our macho male guests excited too! And of course, the kids at the wedding were ecstatic to see Star Wars cookies. The Groom’s Cookies were just one part of the larger mini-dessert bar. The bar was supposed to be off limits at the wedding until the cake cutting, but it was impossible to protect from wandering eyes and sneaking fingers. I literally had one guest (my friend Jason Melendez of WedShare) defiantly waving around a Storm Trooper he had grabbed while I was squabbling with another guest caught red-handed at the dessert table. LOL. At the end of the day, I think all that defiance incited by the hands-off dessert policy was a sign that the dessert table was a definite crowd-pleaser 😉

Hi–I’m Sharon, and I’m a Snackaholic

9 Jul

It’s true–I’m a self-confessed snackaholic. Whether it’s sweet, savory, or tart, I live for those little treats. I’m writing this blog to chronicle my sweet encounters of all the treats I have loved before…and all the treats I can’t wait to try! Beyond flavors, one thing I enjoy about snacks is when they come in exaggerated sizes of the original!

Haribo Mini Gold Bears–the mini-est gummy bears!

Giant Pocky

Big Bite Gummy Bear (Cost Plus)

When my friend Khathi introduced me to this ridiculously large gummy bear, I knew I had to buy one for my friend Ali Tahmasbi who is obsessed with gummies (more than me). After the shock of the sheer size of this gummy bear wore off, he discovered a crazy fact–this gummy has 1.15k calories! The package literally said, “1.15k”! I mean, the calorie count was so high that the manufacturer couldn’t even fit all the zeros on there. And I guess because it is only one gummy bear, you can only reference one serving. HAHA. Anyway, I told him to text me when he takes his first bite. I think we are on Day 4 of Giant Gummy Bear Abstinence, but I have a feeling it won’t last long! 😉
